Triple Crown accommodates UN Summit
Basketball tournaments will be played at Aventura Palace Resort
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 – The Moon Palace resort in Cancun, Mexico, was chosen to be the primary host site of the international United Nations Climate Summit, which means that Triple Crown Sports will return its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to Aventura Palace, a sister resort property about 45 minutes south.

The Cancun Challenge and Caribbean Challenge are played annually during Thanksgiving week, which is when the Moon Palace needs to make security preparations for the summit.

“The Moon Palace asked if we could help them out so they could be in position for this prestigious selection,” Triple Crown Sports CEO David King said. “This is important to the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, and we recognize what an honor this is for Mexico and for the Moon Palace to host this summit.”

Moon Palace was chosen in part because its 2,457 hotel rooms and expansive grounds can service the large international groups and security that are part of the summit, which runs Nov. 29 through Dec. 10. Last year’s summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, was attended by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, as well as other international leaders, and this year’s summit is expected to draw 10,000 people.
Triple Crown Sports has organized Division I basketball tournaments in Cancun for the past six years. More than 75 schools, such as Connecticut, Duke, and Kentucky, have played in the events.

“We are confident this will be a seamless transition to change locations, and we’ll make sure the tournaments continue to be a fantastic experience for our teams and fans,” King said.

Triple Crown is very familiar with the Aventura resort. In 2005 when Hurricane Wilma hit Cancun and the resorts there were devastated, Triple Crown adjusted and moved the tournament south, from Moon Palace in Cancun to the Aventura Spa Palace in the lush Riviera Maya.

The drawing card of the experience remains the same, since both hotels are five-star resorts in the luxurious Palace Resorts family. The basketball tournament is played on site, and all practices are on site as well, which means that teams and fans get to spend more time enjoying the culture and atmosphere instead of spending time on a bus.

Fans who have already booked their reservations with Triple Crown Sports for the men’s and women’s tournaments will be able to switch to the Aventura Palace with no problems.

Admission to basketball games in Cancun is only available through the purchase of a Triple Crown fan package. In late September, should space be available, all tournament passes will be made available. Those looking to stay at another property will be required to purchase an $85 day pass from Aventura Palace resort which covers access to the resort restaurants and other facilities.
